Silvia Basurto, or "La Chivita" as she is called by her family & friends, was born and raised in the broad & rich traditions of Mexico. She was raised on a ranch in Taxthejé, Hidalgo, that was created by her father, Don Teodulfo Basurto. Surrounded by the legacies & lessons of working the earth, pride in her heritage, and a passion for living, it is the music of her region that Silvia still carries with her today.
Silvia first learned a love of music from her father, who taught her to play the old songs of Mexico on the guitar. Professionally, she began her career as a performer at the Hotel Fiesta American Mansión Galindo, organizing group events and presenting thematic musicals.
By her own whimsy, Silvia decided to learn percussion. She fuses all the rhythms that are around her and that are sounded around the world, specializing in deeply-rooted traditional percussion instruments such as djembé, darbouka and the Peruvian box drum.
In 2000, Silvia entered the Centro PROART in the city of Santiago, Querétaro to study at the academy of Spanish & classical dance. Under the supervision of master teacher, Josué Tacoronte Otero, she learned the basics of flamenco and participated in the formation of la Compaña Ballet Españ Proart, serving in various capacities as it toured throughout the republic of Mexico and in the Gran Teatro García Lorca in Havana, Cuba as part of the International Encounter of the Academies. Additionally, she had the opportunity to work with Iberica de Danza de Manuel Segovia, Cristobal Reyes, María Juncal, Belén Maya, María Pagés, Joaquín Grilo, and the Spanish Ballet of Cuba.
In 2007, Silvia recorded the disc "Subiendo el Río" with her musical partner and paramour, Paolo Uccelli. It is a journey of sounds, smells, flavors, and places in a winding, carefree musical exploration.
